Medications for Peptic Ulcer Disease and Gastritis Medication Major Action Nursing Consideration Antibiotics and Bismuth Salts Tetracycline (plus metronidazole, PPI, and bismuth salts Exerts bacteriostatic effects to eradicate H. pylori bacteria in the gastric mucosa *May cause photosensitivity reaction- warn pts to use sunscreen. *Use with caution in pts with renal or hepatic impairment. *Milk or dairy products may reduce med effectiveness. Amoxicillin (plus clarithromycin and PPI such as omeprazole, Prilosec) A bactericidal antibiotic that assists with eradicating H. pylori bacteria in the gastric mucosa. *May cause diarrhea *Do not use in pts allergic to penicillin. Metronidazole (Flagyl); use with clarithromycin and PPI An amebocide that assists with eradicating H. pylori in the gastric mucosa *Administer with meals to decrease GI distress *Administer with other antibiotics and PPI’s Clarithromycin (Biaxin); use with PPI and amoxicillin Exerts bactericidal effects to eradicate H. pylori in
