Acid/Base balance : if you are too acidic or basic- buffers floating around your body help to maintain homeostasis of the hydrogen ions concentration of the ECF The three things that maintain pH balance are: buffer systems in blood- IMMEDIATE response respiratory - within a few minutes to hrs. to respond renal- days or weeks to respond Normal balance is 20 parts base to every one part acid ( 20:1 ) When trying to determine whether an imbalance is resp. or metabolic first ask yourself : Is the pH acid or base? ( determines whether acid or base ) Then look at CO2- is it abnormal? ( resp problem ) If not look at biocarbonate - HCO3- is it abnormal? ( metabolic problem ) Look at the BIG picture! Not all values will be abnormal! Examples she gave us: Car accident with chest trauma, chest crushed - you would expect respiratory acidosis because client retaining CO2. FVE- fluid volume excess:
