The Sexual Response Cycle According to Masters and JohnsonAccording to Masters and Johnson there are four phases in the Sexual Response Cycle. Those four phasesare Excitement, Plateau, Orgasm and Resolution. Some of the general characteristics of the Excitement phase are: increased heart rate and accelerated breathing. With an accelerated heart rate this allows forincreased blood flow to the genitals. In men then penis becomes erect. In women the clitoris and labia minora begin to swell. Other key events that happen during the excitement phase are the vaginal lubrication begin and in males begin secreting a lubrication liquid also. The next phase is Plateau. The plateau phase is the period of sexual excitement prior to orgasm. During this phase, the male muscles at the base of the penis begin a steady rhythmic contraction. For females they continue the bodily changes that started to occur during the Excitement phase. This is referred to asorgasmic platform by Masters and Johnson.
