Chapter 9 Terms Term Detail Significance 1. Age of the Common Man /Jacksonian Democracy Under Jackson Nation had a strong executive, the government lessened the restrictions on who could vote, the idea that the president should act how the people want, and that anyone could be a government official. Led to glorification of common man. 2. Alexis de Tocqueville/ Democracy in America French man whom studied in america, wrote about wonders and limits of american democracy. Led to recognition of the wonders and progress of the american democratic system. 3. Spoils System Jackson’s system of short government terms and said that supporters should get government positions. led to government jobs to be giving for loyalty instead of merit. 4. John Calhoun South Carolina senator who pushed South Carolina to nullify the tariff of abominations Led to the nullification crisis, the force bill, and the compromise tariff of 1833. 5. Nullification South Carolina nullifies tariff, Jackson declares it as unconstitutional and attacks with an army. led to force bill and southern realization that they need to unity or they will fail.
