Nayely Almanzar Mrs. Bruso English 11 Period 2 March 3 2022 Explanations of literary one-pager project 1. How the Garcia girls lost their accents by Julia Alvarez 2.A borderwhich somehowrepresents at least1 key themefrom the novel My border represents at least 1 key theme from the novel because it is the colors of the Dominican flag, which are red and blue. This is significant as it represents the hometown of the girls. A repeated theme throughout the novel is language barriers, identity, and culture. This is due to the fact that the Garica girls migrated to the United States which forced them to understand the cultural differences and be faced with responsibilities they didn't have before. 3.An imagein the upper left-hand cornerwith a quote & citationwoven into or around it. This image should somehow represent what you consider to bethe most importantsymbolin the text. The image(s) and quotes I chose represent the girls having to leave their culture and heritage behind when they came to New York. They had to quickly adapt to the American lifestyle. As the title of the book proclaims, the girls lost their accents and innocence once they came to the states. I consider this to be the most important symbol in the text because leaving your home for a better future for your family and self, is difficult. Quote:“So, Laura thinks. So the papers have cleared and we are leaving. Now everything she sees sharpens as if through the lens of loss - the orchids in their hanging straw baskets, the row of apothecary jars Carlos has found for her in old druggists' throughout the countryside, the rich light shafts swarming with a golden pollen. She will miss this glorious light warming the inside of her skin and jewelling the trees, the grass, the lily pond beyond the hedge” (Alvarez 328).
