Unformatted text preview: Saccharomyces cerevisiae Geneticists have studied many organisms in an effort to understand the way information is inherited. In general, genetic vectors have been chosen because they are easy to grow, they grow fast, they have lots of traits to select for, and they can be crossed. Drosophila , for example, can be grown in the laboratory easily on semi-defined media, reproduces prodigiously and rapidly, and possesses lots of different markers which can be selected. Moreover, Drosophila can be crossed with ease allowing the genetic researcher to isolate mutations and study their interactions with other genes. The only negative aspect to the fruit fly is the fact that its predominant form is a diploid. Diploid organisms, by definition, have two of everything and as such have twice the number of genes to be concerned with.
