Mickey Questions for Critical Thinking (No. 3) Dysfunctional conflicts refer to types of disagreement in which group performance is hindered, and are typically represented in the ‘relationship’ category of conflict. For example, in high school, I belonged to a group of 8 friends (we called ourselves the ‘KST girls’). However, after one not-so-pleasant incident on our senior trip, one of the girls and I stopped getting along. After we all swore that we’d be friends forever, we soon found each KST girl taking sides. Solely due to the fact that the two of us couldn’t get along, our group dissolved ties, and eventually the KST group was no longer in existence. The other girls in my group of friends probably agree that this is an example of ‘dysfunctional’ conflict. If it weren’t for our negative attitudes toward each other, the group would have never fallen apart. Functional conflicts, however, support the goals of the group and increase its performance. Rather than focusing on relationship conflict, they instead spotlight the task and process areas of conflict. For instance, my tennis doubles partner and I do not necessarily get along in the tennis world. I’m an aggressive baseliner who loves low, hard shots, and playing from well behind the baseline.
