Hate Crime - offenders choose victim b/c of characteristic and provides evidence hatred prompted them to act a. Hate Crime Statistics Act : (1990) tells Dept. of Justice to gather data on hate crimes b. Over half of reported hate crimes for race (13-18% each of ethnicity, orientation, religion) c. Watch-dog org.’s document bias violence: i. Anti-Defamation League ii. National Institute Against Prejudice and Violence iii. Southern Poverty Law Center iv. National Gay and Lesbian Task Force d. propaganda can’t be stopped to promote hate groups b/c of free speech II. Prejudice and Discrimination a. Prejudice: negative attitude toward category of ppl. i. Does NOT involve actions b. Ethnnophaulism: ethnic slurs c. Discrimination: behavior excluding members of group from rights, opportunities, or privileges d. Merton’s Typology i. Prejudice DOESN’T necessarily entail discrimination 1. All-weather liberal: no prej/no disc.
