Vorticity and Convergence/Divergence A. Definition: The measure of spin in a fluid. B. Types: 1. relative vorticity - vorticity due to shear and/or curvature 2. Earth’s vorticity – Coriolis = 2 sin φ 3. absolute vorticity – relative + Earth’s C. If the air is rotating counterclockwise, cyclonic vorticity, or positive vorticity, is generated. D. If the air is rotating clockwise, anticyclonic vorticity, or negative vorticity, is generated. 1

Unformatted text preview: 1. Where it says slower than geostrophic, curvature is generating cyclonic (positive) vorticity; combine with divergence = a surface low pressure located under the word divergence 2. Where it says faster than geostrophic, curvature is generating anticyclonic (negative) vorticity; combine this with convergence = a surface high pressure located under the word convergence. 2 3...
