CHAPTER 4 Process of converting psychological notions into numbers on of the most important parts of the research process. Self Report questions: “hurdles”: making sure people are considering the right question – insuring that research participants are thinking about the same question that the research was thinking about. Making sure people are able to conver their reaction to the question into a meaningful answer – ensuring that participants are able to translate their internal psychological state into some kind of value ona response scale. Two phases participants go through: Judgment phase – people need to answer the question the researcher is asking them, how accurately does the researcher think they conveyed the message they were trying to send to the participant…. - Response translation phase – people need to translate their subjective feelings to a scale system provided by the researcher Structured self report questions – force people to use a specific response scale – researchers
