SOCIAL POLICY DECISIONS: MADD 2 Social Policy Decisions: MADD Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has arguably been one of the most successful public-health grassroots citizen advocacy organizations in the United States in the past century (Fell & Voas, 2006). Many problems within American society led to the gathering of the group, and since its founding, it has influenced policies and problems facing society. The delivery of Human Services has also been effected by the organization. As with and evolving society, new problems arise, and call for new organizations such as MADD. The organization was started by no doubt, one of the hardest times a parent could possibly face. Four days after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mrs. Candy Lightner founded "Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD)". The organization was formed to bring about a change in the drunk driving attitudes of the public, and more specifically in the way convicted drunk drivers were treated by the law enforcement and judicial communities. (Amodei, 1982) It’s understandable why other mothers felt compelled to band together, alongside Lightner, to take a stand against the possible negative outcomes of alcohol use. Upon its founding, the organization formed a mission statement which remains, “ to aid the victims of crimes performed by individuals driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to aid the families of such victims
