The movie Eat Drink Man Woman, directed by Ang Lee, showcases the importance of relationships and familial life in modern day Taiwan. This film does a wonderful job showing the connection between traditional and modern influences in Taiwan. For example, the father spends hours preparing traditional Taiwanese dishes, while the youngest daughter works at Wendy’s serving chicken and fries. Additionally, modernity is represented through the desire of the oldest daughter to move from the old family home to a modern apartment complex. Eat Drink Man Woman provides an excellent look into the stereotypical views of women in Taiwan in their search for love. The oldest daughter is viewed as an old maid, incapable of finding a man; the middle daughter is portrayed as the career woman, who doesn’t prioritize love, and the youngest daughter in her search for the meaning of life and love.
