Brian McGinnis Mary Ann Di Edwardo English 2 3/06/08 Paper #2 Dazed and Confused and Their Eyes Were Watching God both display a carefree lifestyle that focuses not on the future but rather the present. Janie, following the death of her husband, follows Tea Cake around and finally finds not only love but learns to live in the moment. The high school students in Dazed and Confused also live in the moment on their last day of high school in 1976 through revelry and a carefree attitude that is enviable. In Dazed and Confused the students have been oppressed by societal standards for the entire year and they are finally able to experience the joys in life much like Janie is able to do with Tea Cake. Both Janie and the characters in Dazed and Confused live life and do not worry about others opinions of the lifestyles that they lead. Their Eyes Were Watching God and Dazed and Confused both possess characters who have a jovial, free-spirit attitude toward life. As Janie states in Their Eyes Were Watching God, “If you kin see de light at daybreak, you don’t keer if you die at dusk. It’s so many people never seen de light at all.”(p. 159). Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God is oppressed by her arranged marriage with Joe Starks. Starks is an honorable man however as Janie as described as, “knew [Janie] now that marriage did not make love. Janie’s first dream was dead, so she became a woman”(p.25). This oppression is no different than the students of Robert E. Lee High School in small town Texas. These students, much like Janie, are oppressed by societal conformity as they are stuck in a situation in which they have no release from the daily oppression of their teachers and work. Randall Floyd the film’s main character is oppressed by football and his overbearing coaches who try to force him to sign a pledge to his team that he will be an upstanding gentleman. This little bit of oppression sets him off and much like Janie is a black cloud that hangs over his
