Cultural Anthropology and Human Diversity Examination 1: Essay Question 4 3OCT2007 The Na and the Nyimba are alike in that they both are native to Western Nepal in the Himalayan Mountains. They are also alike in that they both rely upon agriculture, as their main form of survival and it is center to their economy. Their agricultural patterns are also similar in that whole families work together to tend the land and provide for the family, however there are two major differences between these two societies that make them interesting to compare. Though maintaining the integrity of the land which has been past down from generation to generation among these societies, they each have different ways in which they attempt to tackle this problem of keeping the families together and avoid partitioning the land. Within the Nyimba society, their relationships are a form of fraternal polyandry in which a group of brothers marries one woman who comes to represent the land. From the video that we watched in class, we were able to see specifically what this relationship is like, and the troubles that it can cause. In the video that we watched in class, the anthropologist studying this society focused on a relationship that originally started as an attraction between a young man named Sonam and a young woman named Dzoomket. We know little of their back-story, except that they are both married when they meet and want out of their current marriages so that they may
