Sociology- Dalton Conley 2/4/08 Paradox : o Legitimate authority is based on an implicit threat of force, but the moment force is  used, Authority is lost  Types of authority stem directly from types of actions Types of Action : o Technically rational     - logically chosen means to get to logical chosen ends o Value rational     - logically chosen mean to get to an emotional end o Affective     - unconscious expression of emotion o Traditional     - unthinking. Not logically reflected; following tradition and ignoring the  possibility to ask why Types of Authority : o Legal     - modern bureaucracy/ form of authority. Rational rules and positions are  more  important, not so much the person. Rules transcend individuals, very strong  and  difficult to change the rules o Rational     o Traditional     - monarchy, religious order; dominates by virtue of rules, age, power,
