See below. Office hours: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 to 5:30 pm Office: Mondays: Room 302B, Snoqualmie Hall, CWU – Lynnwood Wednesdays: TBD Course Description Business leaders increasingly recognize that “business” and “ethics” cannot be separated. All business decisions rest on often implicit values statements and involve ethics, and society increasingly expects businesses to be responsive to the interests of many stakeholders and not just shareholders. The purpose of this course is to help students recognize the ethical dimensions of business and integrate ethics into their decision making, so that they develop their sense of responsible judgment and become more effective managers and leaders. Whereas management and leadership courses often introduce ideas and tools designed to make decision making easier, the ideas and tools in this course are designed to make decision making more difficult. Taking ethics and values seriously requires that you grapple with nuances and difficulties that may have seemed simple at first glance. Nevertheless, a leader who recognizes the ethical aspects of a decision and wrestles more profoundly with those issues is ultimately better prepared to make more effective decisions -- decisions that are more

2 comprehensive and informed, and take a fuller account of the decision’s downstream implications and second- and third-order effects. This being the case, the benefit derived from the course will be directly related to how much effort you put into it. This course will challenge you to challenge your own preconceived ideas about business and its purpose, right and wrong, and how to make decisions that are effective and fair. I hope you accept the challenge! Student Learning Objectives By the end of the course, you should be able to: 1. Recognize ethical issues in business and the stakeholders to those issues. 2. Appreciate the role of ethics as central in business decision making. 3. Understand leading ethical perspectives and apply them to complex business issues. 4. Build consideration of ethics into organizational decision making processes and other organizational elements (e.g., structure, culture, routines, performance metrics). 5. Critically examine your own ethics and continuously test them in conversation and action. How the Course Will Operate The format for this course will be a bit odd because enrollment is split among the Ellensburg, Lynnwood, and Des Moines campuses (only one from DM). I have decided to address this as follows: Every Monday I will teach at the Lynnwood campus , which is my home campus. The Monday sessions will be for Lynnwood students only. Ellensburg and Des Moines
