Introduction An IC Engine converts about 25-35% of the fuel energy into M.E About 35% of the heat generated is lost to the cooling medium, remainder dissipated through exhaust and lube oil. During combustion, the cylinder gas T often reaches a high value & a considerable amount of heat is transferred to the cylinder walls. So, it’s necessary to have a proper cooling system in an automobile engine, if the efficient working of all parts are to be ensured. 11/11/16 2

Why is Cooling System necessary?? 11/11/16 3 Due to the high T of combustion, physical & chemical changes may occur to the lube oil & it loses its lubricating properties. Causes wear & sticking of the piston rings, scoring of the cylinder walls or even seizure of the piston. Overheated cylinder head may lead to overheated spark plugs & valves which may cause pre-ignition or detonation. Excessive heating of the engine may lead to complete loss of power & failure of the engine.

Engine Cooling System - Characteristics 11/11/16 4 1. It should be capable of removing about 35% of heat generated in the combustion chamber while maintaining the optimum T of the engine under all operating conditions. 2. It should remove heat at a faster rate when the engine is hot. During starting of the engine, the cooling should be minimum, so that the working parts of the engine reach their operating T’s in a short time.
