Anna Moore Sickle Cell Disease Diary Entries 3/2/16 Diary Entry 1: Elaina, age 7 (Mom Point of View) We’re back in today, another transfusion. My poor baby girl, we found out about 3 months ago she has sickle cell disease and I’m not quite sure how to handle it. She has what are called episodes that cause her chest to hurt and her hands a feet swell up. At first they only lasted a couple hours but those hours moved to days and we had no idea what to do, she was also missing a lot of school When we discovered this, they decided to put her on chronic transfusion therapy in order to lessen the episodes. The hematologist explained to us some of the risk. Receiving the blood transfusions over time the body can collect to much iron and go into iron overload which can lead to hemochromatosis, which can be fatal if untreated. We were very cautious in thinking over what we should do, because are daughter was in pain and nothing was fixing her and the only way to help was to do something that could potentially hurt her more.
