Professor Sawaya English 371 1 November 2015 Oppressed by the System The main character and hero of Sinclair’s famous novel The Jungle is Jurgis Rudkus, and it is through his perspective which most of the action of the novel is shown from. Spending most of his life in Lithuania, the naïve Jurgis immigrates to America seeking what he hears is the “American Dream.” Unused to dishonestly and extreme exploitation, Jurgis from the onset sees only the apparent efficiency of the system and not its brutality. He fails to appreciate why other workers criticize their jobs and instead is almost servile in his gratitude for having been chosen to be a part of this great industrial activity. However, the difficulties of life in Packingtown rob Jurgis of his health, strength and spirit. Jurgis is depicted as a victim of chance and whose fate is determined by forces beyond his control. The lack of any character flaw in Jurgis, who is merely a victim of the oppressive conditions
