BUAD 304 Professor Cummings TA: Zheying Wu January 24, 2006 Assignment #1 Chapter 5 Case Incident: J&J Automotive Sales 1. Explain how you think the stereotype of used-car dealers developed. a. Used-car salesmen have the Hollywood stereotype of being a slick-talking and ostentatiously dressed with the flashy gold jewelry and uses the famous line “Hey, I’ve got a deal for you.” It is interesting how this stereotype originated, especially since people like Joe Baum probably wear khakis and a polo to work. First of all, this stereotype could have originated from one person’s perception. Perception is a process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impression in order to give meaning to their environment. Personal characteristics that affect perception include attitude, personality, motives, interests, and so forth. Perhaps on person had an experience trying to purchase a used car. Perhaps that salesman tried to force the person to buy the car and the car was unreliable. That could have started the perception of used-car salesmen as being sleazy and a rumor could have started.
