God Duncan (King) Malcolm (sons) Macduff, Macbeth, Banquo, Thane of Ross Lady Macbeth, Lady Macduff Lennox, servants, other women, children of the weird sisters (witches) Macbeth Characters This social hierarchy reflects the social structures of the Elizabethan society. It is very rigid and each member is given that place of authority by the one above. For example, Duncan is king because God gave him this position through his birthright. Example: line 44-45 – “We (Duncan) will establish our estate (kingdom) upon our eldest Malcolm”. King Duncan is making Malcolm his heir to the throne. Each person must know their place. Good “order” or “peace”, and therefor “life” is dependent on maintaining the good order of society. Gen Ch1:1-2 – God creates order out of “the deep” (chaos), this order allows life to emerge/to exist. In attacking (killing) the King, Macbeth is attacking the very order and foundations of society.
