1Chapter 2 Constitutional Democracy 1776 - declaration of independence and revolutionary war 1789 - when the constitution takes effect before, each state would take their own state into consideration, and no others I. Basis for the Constitution. a. Principles. i. Protect Liberty 1. Limited Government (it is run by ppl who want to control, so we can’t let the power be centralized too much... before the king decided everything... judges, laws, etc.) a. British Common Law Protection of life, Liberty and Property b. British abandoned principles with Colonies. i. Stamp Act and Quartering of soldiers ii.British shipped Americans to England for trial. ii. Self- government. 1. Colonies had elected governors and legislatures (wanted to keep these as they moved into the new governing laws). b. Declaration of Independence. 1776 - (why they were mad at the king) i. Inalienable or Natural Rights. Life, Liberty (not until 13 th ,14 th , 15 th amendments later on), Pursuit of happiness and Protection of Property. —>Jefferson ii. Declaration of Independence is not law.
