Rigsby Katie Rigsby English 1102 Rachel Van Horn April 16, 2008 Is Abstinence The Only Thing to Teach? Nearly one million girls under the age of twenty become pregnant every year. For those counting, that is 2,800 unplanned pregnancies a day. Imagine, so many bright futures destroyed by two simple pink lines. To most teenagers, pregnancy is the only consequence to be concerned about, but the aftermath does not stop there. Annually, two out of four adolescents will contract a sexually transmitted disease (Soundvision.com). Sex has become a dangerous game of Russian roulette for uneducated and unprotected teens. The only sex education teenagers are exposed to only provide information for “abstinence only” ideals. Therefore, abstinence only programs do not provide adequate information for teens to protect themselves if they do chose to become sexually active, and consequently have devastating effects. By definition, sex education is the process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy (avert.com). Recently, sex education has been in heated debate in congress and within the public school systems. The argument at hand is abstinence only curriculum verses comprehensive sex education. Abstinence only sex education programs focus on the concept of sustaining from sex completely, and are prohibited from discussing contraception or condoms as a means of preventing unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV/AIDS. This curriculum suggests that abstinence from sexual activity is the common standard of school-age children. On the contrary, 1
