Flora and Chassin are testing to see if children of alcoholics are more likely to use drugs themselves or if they abstain from it. Specifically looking at children whose parents were alcoholics and other children of non-alcoholics, and how drug use will take place when they emerge into young adulthood. Also, taking a look at the gender of the upcoming young adults, if their parents abused drugs, and whether or not if they are or have been married or divorced or separated. 2. The independent variables in this research would be if you were child on alcoholic or not a child of an alcoholic. The dependent variables are if you increased, maintained drug use, or just obviously stayed away from drug or alcohol use. Then the for the third variable would be based on gender of the child being observed in the experiment.
