LAB 10 INTERFERENCE AND DIFFRACTION PURPOSE The purpose of this lab was to more closely understand the phenomenons of diffraction and interference. Diffraction is when any type of wave (whether it light, liquid, or sound) spread around narrow sources. Using a laser and observing screen, along with given calculations, we are able to comprehend these phenomena. MATERIALS U Calculator U Basic Optics Diode Laser U Observing U Ruler PROCEDURE U Using the double slit interference procedure, the basic optics diode laser is aimed at one of the double slit openings. View the pattern formed on the observing screen. U The next step it to measure the positions of each of the intensity maxima and minima. U Compute λ using the equation: λ = d ( x / D n .
