Lab #10 PURPOSE The purpose of this lab is mainly to test the prediction of the equation: m water C w Δ T w = m metal C m Δ T m . Using a calorimeter, heat transfer between to substances, water and metal, will be measured. The law of conservation of energy says that energy can not be created or destroyed, it can only change from one form to another. APPARATUS U Thermometers U Bunsen Burner U Spark Lighter U Scale U Water U Unknown Metal U Calculator PROCEDURE First, the mass of a metal sample was measured and immersed in boiling water. It was allowed to remain in the water for a few minutes (without touching the side of the container) until the metal was the same temperature as the water. The temperature was then recorded as the temperature of the metal sample. Next, the mass of a sample of water was measured and placed into a calorimeter. Its temperature was also measured. The metal sample was quickly transferred into the calorimeter. The metal sample was dried to prevent heat transfer from the water that the metal sample was in.
