Tech 705 SOLVENT EXTRACTION INTRODUCTION Extraction is a procedure that separates a mixture compound from an organic compound by dissolving one or more of the mixture compounds in a suitable solvent. The extraction process in organic chemistry usually involves the moving of compounds from a single liquid solvent to another liquid solvent. To ensure the extraction will be successful, the two liquid solvents must be immiscible in one another in order to produce the desired segregated layers. EXPIRIMENTAL PROCEDURE The extraction mixture was prepared by adding 5 mL of tert -butyl methyl ether to a test tube containing 50-70 mg of acetanilide, 80-120 mg of p- toluic acid and 80-120 mg of p-tert - butylphenol. The test tube was shaken vigorously to mix and dissolve the solids. Toluic acid was extracted by adding 2.0 mL of 0.5 M aqueous NaHCO 3 to the previous solution and lightly mixed. The intensity of manual mixing was increased, making sure to carefully allow any CO 2 gas produced to escape. The layers were then allowed to separate. The layers were confirmed by observing what happens when a few drops of water were added. The aqueous layer was removed using a pipet and placed into a different test tube.
