Procedure (Based on Students Notes) Begin by setting up the fraction distillation apparatus, image 5.4 is a good guide. Make sure for the fractional distillation that the second condenser is vertically set up between the distilling flask and three-way adapter. Make sure your tubes are connected to the proper outlets: 1) for the water inlet ran from the sink and another 2) to drain into the sink. Collect 40mL of a premixed methanol water sample and place in the distilling flask. Make sure to add a single boiling chip to the distilling flask as well. Check to make sure all the clamps and glass fittings are snug before the hot plate is turned on. Once a final check is completed turn the hot plate on and set the temperature at 350 degrees Celsius. As every 2 mL of distillate is collect record the temperature. Data/Observations Our experiment seemed to take longer to collect the distilled sample as opposed to other groups. The temperature very slowly increased and then it did not change. We collected 20
