Elisa Giordano Due: September 27, 2006 Lab #2 Determining the Rate Law for the Crystal Violet – Hydroxide Ion Reaction INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Lab exercise was to look at the how changes in an initial reactant concentration effected the reaction rate. Reacting crystal violet dye, [(H 3 C) 2 NC 6 H 5 ] 3 C + , and hydroxide ion, OH - , data regarding the rate of the reaction can be recorded. A spectrometer can be used to measure the absorbance of the mixture over a period of time; this will show the data needed to comprehend the rate law.
