Hannan Merritt Discussion Notes 11/29/07 The “Tale of the Military Secret” has strong Soviet overtones. “… looking proudly at the little octobrist”. The link to communism is readily apparent with terminology like “the Red Army had driven the White forces of the accursed bourgeoisie far away”. The word bourgeoisie is one of a communists favorite words. The ethos of the Communist Party is subtly put into the story. In this quote they are subtly building up collectivism and the greatness of work for the common good. “Live and work—it was a good life”. The “Tale of the Military Secret” had a component of American folklore with the image of a galloping horseman riding through the countryside to rouse the people to fight the invading army. “"Hey, arise!" shouted the rider. "Disaster has come from an unexpected quarter. The accursed bourgeoisie has attacked us from beyond the Black Mountains.
