Hannan Merritt Discussion Notes Spirits On page 4 of Bezhin Lea there is mention of some type of spirit even though it is the “factory goblin”. This creature has the characteristic of invisibility just the house spirit, domovoi. Also on page 4 there was mention of a water fairy mixing characteristics of Vodianoi and Rusalka spirits. This fairy was tempting him and laughing at him but by making the sign of the cross he was able to ward off the fairy and find his way home. On page 7 and a little bit of 8 there is a mention of a man who was drowned and one of the boys believes that he heard “his soul complaining” of the injustice committed on him by forest thieves. There are two possible explanations for this. First it could simply be a very strong Christian motif about the soul or it could be a hint about the dangers of the water spirit Vodianoi. On page 8 the boys are worried about a sound they because it could be the “wood-demon” or Leshii spirit. “'He saw him. Big as big he was, he said, and dark, all wrapped up, just like he was behind a tree so you couldn't see him clearly, or like he was hiding from the moon, and looking all the time, peering with his wicked eyes, and winking them, winking . . .'” On page 8 the boys talk about the “water-sprite” and a woman named Akulina and how “’ He
