Nikki Maher May 6, 2016 IB Anthropology Period 1 Does globalization weaken social and cultural differences? Globalization involves a rapid pattern of interconnections between countries and cultures. New ideas and behaviors spread to new areas, while localization allows these areas to still maintain their own cultural identity. Oftentimes, when new ideas and behaviors are brought to an area, they will come to replace old traditions and customs. This globalization can weaken social ties as well as cultural traditions that have previously been established within a group of people. The Dobe Ju/hoansi and the Dominican sex workers of Sosua are two groups that have been prodigiously affected by globalization. Richard B. Lee’s ethnography The Dobe Ju/hoansi takes place over a 40-year time period, beginning in 1964, where he travels to the Kalahari Desert in the areas between Namibia and Botswana, using participant observation to study the Ju and observe how they have been affected by globalization.
