Chemistry 4/8 Homework Due Thursday : 1,2,4,5,9,12,30,32 Fossil fuels provide 85% of our nation's overall energy Due to the political turmoil in the Middle East, the national policy if focused on decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels; however, our dependency rose from 35% to over 50% Our oil reserves will last for about 50 years Our coal reserves will last for about 150 years The solution is renewable energy Wind, solar and hydroelectric power Energy is the capacity to do work Work is energy describing movement against a restraining force (ie gravity) W(work)=Force*distance Ex: Lifting a book against the force of gravity Much work is performed by heat Movement of an automobile Combustion of gasoline (releases heat or energy) Heat causes expansion of gases (pushes pistons) Heat is energy that flows from a hotter to a colder object; it is a consequence of molecules moving at the molecular level Ex: grabbing a hot pan on a stove
