Chapter 1 The Microbial World Microorganisms are ubiquitous ; every surface, the air, water, even glaciers contain countless numbers of microorganisms. Vital Functions of Microorganisms: initiators in food chains of the soils and waters recyclers of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in the environment. Producers of food products like cheeses, yogurt, alcohol, leavened bread Other microorganisms may cause food spoilage, act as parasites of useful plants and animals, or cause human diseases or death. These are called pathogens . Identification of Microorganisms Binomial System of Nomenclature- Carolus Linnaeus established system of scientific nomenclature that assigns each organism two names: Genus and species. Bacteria belong to the Domain Bacteria; other prokaryotes Belong to Domain Archaea; Eukaryotes belong to Domain Eukarya Domain Bacteria: Are unicellular life forms Cell walls of petidoglycan No nuclear membrane Single circular chromosome Reproduce by binary fission Three characteristic morphologies: Bacillus Coccus Spirillum Domain Archaea: methanogens, extreme halophiles, extreme thermophiles Are unicellular life forms Cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan
