Whitney Barter Ch. 14 – R 1-3, 5-8, 10-12, 15; MC 3, 4; CT 1, 3 3/10/08 1. Differentiate the terms in each of the following pairs: a. Etiology and Pathogenesis Etiology is the study of the cause of a disease and Pathogenesis is the manner in which a disease develops. b. Infection and Disease Infection is the growth of microorganisms in the body and Disease is an abnormal state in which part or all of the body is not properly adjusted or is incapable of performing normal functions; any change in state of health. c. Communicable disease and Noncommunicable disease – A communicable disease is any disease that can be spread from one host to another. A noncommunicable disease is one that is not transmitted from one person to another. 2. What is meant by normal microbiota? How do they differ from transient microbiota? Normal microbiota are the microorganisms that colonize a host without causing disease. Transient microbiota are microorganisms that are present in an animal for a short time without causing a disease. 3. Define symbiosis . Differentiate among commenalism, mutualism, and parasitism and give an example of each. Symbiosis is the living together of two different organisms or populations. Commenalism is where one organism benefits and the other is unaffected. An example would be the corynebacteria that inhabit the surface of the eye that feed on secretions and sloughed off cells, but they bring no apparent benefits or harm to the host. Mutualism is where both organisms benefit. An example would be E. coli living in the large intestine that synthesizes Vitamin K and some B vitamins for the body, while the large intestine provides nutrient to the bacteria. Parasitism is where one organisms benefits and the other is harmed. An example would be almost any disease causing bacteria. 5. Describe how Koch’s postulates establish the etiology of many infectious diseases. Why don’t Koch’s postulate apply to all infectious diseases?
