Microbial Diseases of the Nervous System Review the anatomy of the Nervous System: CNS, PNS, motor neurons, sensory neurons, meninges, ventricles, Cerebrospinal fluid, blood-brain barrier The blood-brain barrier normally prevents most large molecules, such as antibiotics, from entering the CNS. Infections of the nervous system occur when microorganisms physically enter the CNS thru the bloodstream, lymph fluids or through trauma. Meningitis: infection of the meninges; may be caused by viral infections, bacteria, protozoa or Fungi Encephalitis: infection of the brain tissues; may be caused by viral infections, bacteria, Protozoa or Fungi Bacterial Diseases of the Nervous System: Meningitis: Viral, bacterial, fungal or protozoan infections A. Three most common bacterial agents are Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae , and Neisseria memingitidis 1. H. influenzae is found in normal throat microbiota of most adults a. requires blood factors for growth b. most common cause of meningitis in children under age 4 years c. vaccine is available 2. S. pneumoniae is usually found as normal microbiota in healthy adults a. Iimmunocompromised patients, young children and toddlers are most susceptible b. Has a high mortality rate; also high rate of permanent brain damage c. Vaccine for peneumococcal pneumonia is protective 3. N. meningitidis is found in normal throat microbiota of healthy adults a. enters the meninges through the bloodstream; may multiply in neutrophils within the CNS b. symptoms are caused by a potent endotoxin; occurs most often in young children or institutional populations
