Loughman Tara Loughman W.R.D 104 Sec. 202 January 30, 2008 The Daughters Of Bilitis Homosexuality is something that has been frowned upon since the beginning of time. It is not until recent years however that gays and lesbians have been able to actually feel a sense of acceptance in society. What changed over the years that made homosexuality more acceptable though? The answer is gay and lesbian organizations. Among these organizations is an organization known as D.O.B, which stands for the Daughters of Bilitis. The Daughters of Bilitis was the first national lesbian political and social organization in the United States. This organization helped to open the eyes of people prejudice against homosexuals and to comfort women that were lesbian and let them know that they should live their lives the way they choose. The Daughters of Bilitis was founded in 1955 in San Francisco and got its name from the “songs of bilitus” which is a lesbian themed song cycle (Theophano 1). Within three years of the organization being founded it had already spread to other states and had become very popular. On September 20, 1958 the Daughters of Bilitis held their first meeting at the offices of the
