Abbi Porter Professor Byock English 110 23 September 2016 Women Rule More Than Men It is said that women rule the kingdom when the men are away . . . or is it when the men look away? Females in Beowulf have the sole purpose of supporting the men and tending to their every need with the one exception of Grendel's mother. This is especially noticeable in the movie due to the addition of dramatic twists making the film more sexist. Both the narrative and film adaptation portray the women taking on the 'oh so difficult ' job of running, screaming, cleaning, and conceiving. In the movie, they are the eye candy and the arm trophies. At least, that is what the men think. This is only to lead them into being tricked by Grendel's mother undoubtedly making her more powerful than all the men in the tale. In chapter 9 of Beowulf , you will apprehend that Wealhtheow was mentioned for the sake of showing her place next the king. Hrothgar's queen was described only as being "adorned with gold"(610) and "gold ornaments"(641-642). Beginning the belittlement of women, Wealhtheow was the first female mentioned other than Healfdene's daughter who was not even named until later in the narrative.
