Paine grew up in Norfolk, England and worked in his early life as a ship stay maker with his father. He
pursued appointments as an Excise Officer and was appointed to a station in Sussex, England where
there was a lot of anti-monarch sentiment. This experience got him involved in civil matters and he was
even part of the governing the town there.
Jefferson grew up in colonial Virginia where he went to school and found a love for books and reading.
He eventually went on to become a lawyer. Jefferson was a advocate for Natural Law and felt that all
men were born with certain right's that could not be taken away by the government. His work on the
Declaration of Independence is probably the most important of his life.
Paine could be seen to be at a disadvantage to Jefferson because he didn't grow up in colonial America
but he had shown interest in a revolution even when he was still living in England. Once he arrived in
