MADD Social Policy 2The organization MADD which stands for Mothers against Drunk Driving has had a significant impacton social policy. MADD has been responsible for changing laws regarding drinking and driving throughout the United States. MADD has also changed the legal age for drinking and purchasing alcohol, made stricter laws for individuals who are found guilty of drunk driving and has become one of the largest agencies to improve assistance provided to the families who have lost loved ones as a result of drunk driving. Mothers against Drunk Driving was founded by Candice (Candy) Lightner in 1980 after her daughter Cari was the victim of a drunken hit and run where she was killed (Friedrich,1985). Lightner organized with other mothers who also wanted to take a stand against alcohol related accidents and fatalities. The overall mission of the MADD organization is to stop drunken driving, support victims of drunk driving, and prevent underage drinking. (MADD). MADD is also an advocate for educating the public on the dangers and consequences of drunk driving.
