What four issues does Leone suggest are pertinent to symbolic, structural, and critical archaeology? Describe each in detail. 1. The interactive or recursive quality of culture. Rather than supposing that culture is born by people in a fairly passive and unaware fashion, the assumption is that people create, use, modify, and manipulate their symbolic capabilities, making and remaking the world that they live in. 2. An emphasis on meaning. The materialism which has been rejected by symbolic and critical archaeology is that which is seen as a hierarchy of factors going from ecological, technological, and demographic considerations to social organization, and to a vaguely defined ideological or religious organization. 3.
