Sunny Kaercher 810672916 March 18, 2008 ENVS 1000 – 018 Natural Gas Development in Colorado Summary: Various policy makers and organizations have been opposing development of the Roan Plateau in Western Colorado. This extensive natural habitat in Garfield County has been under debate for several years. The Department of Natural Resources has been pushing to save the maximum amount of land for its diversity and uniqueness. Its “visual resources, aesthetic values, wildlife habitat, botanical values, ecological values and fisheries habitat…” are precious to humankind as a whole, but especially the Coloradoans that are able to enjoy them on a frequent basis. The Bureau of Land Management has proposed to reserve about one third of the plateau as Areas of Environmental Concern (ACES), but this is inadequate to sustain and support the myriad range of species living there. The Naval Oil Shale Reserve under the plateau is estimated to have 8.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas within it.
