Finality over Fairness

The role of innocence in the criminal justice system. Tricia Is with the MIP representing folks in
jail for crimes that they didn’t commit. The current system values finality over fairness. After a trial you
have 90 days to come forward with new evidence not previously examined to prove your innocence.
Through the duration of those ninety days you are in jail with no money, phone, and limited resources.
Innocence is not a legal claim you can make in court. 2 states execute people USA and Somalia. The
system is built to convict and incentivizes pleas and bargains. The Memphis 3 is a prime example where
they all took the plea for a lesser punishment but this is not just or right. Forensic science is outdated
inaccurate and unreliable. Fingerprints are not unique and evidence of this is portrayed in the London
Bombings through the cognitive bias of the fingerprint analysts. Eye witness is still relied on today and is
the leading cause for wrongful convictions this needs to be revised.
