Definition of the Situation by W.I. Thomas The decision making ability is a product of self-motivated vs. outer enforcement. This  decision making includes the power of inhibition, meaning one refusing to follow their  instinct to a stimulation which has given one painful consequences before.  In a society, children are born and rise to follow certain norms, of which teaching them  manage their wishes not to have conflict with the society wishes. The criminals are  whose individual wishes are in conflict with the wishes of society. However, there is  always a rivalry between what one thinks of the situation and the society thinks of the  situation. Moral codes, a set of rules, hold the function of regulating this conflict. It’s a  generally accepted definition of the situation. A child learns this through different sources  and ways from the society he grows up in.
