Poli Sci 104 Lecture Notes 2/22/07 1. Lesislative Case a. Airlines are heavily regulated industry b. Many major flight delays during brutal February winter storm (2007) c. Due to outrageous delays and lack of provisions, senators Boxer (D-CA) and Snowe (R-ME) decide something must be done d. They introduce “airline passenger” bill or rights act of 2007 e. Given a # and referred to Senate committee on commerece, science, and transportation f. Reaction? i. Opposed by airline industry argues to handle situation voluntarily ii. A hearing is likely; this is a good story to see if legislation is passed 2. What is the big deal about Pork Barrel Spending? a. PBS is stupid and hypocritical b. Adds to budget deficit c. Important to note about PBS: i. Criticisms often disguise policy disagreement ii. Useful to grease legislative process iii. It is not always “Waste” 3. Parties of Congress a. Second major organizational force in congress (behind committees) b. Role of party, identification as congressional behavior
