First note that Fran and Noura are the same people. Fran is when she was young earlier. And Noura is after (she met her etc.) Best frnds in LA in the ‘50’s. Lois has been an agnostic most of her life and Fran (now Noura) is a devout muslim of the sufi sect They watched movies and listened to music together and their reaction to these kinda separated them from each other. They also reacted differently to the historical events for e.g. McCarthyism (anti-Communist suspicion in the US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism ) Fran was part of the Lama Foundation (a religious community in New Mexico) and later married her brother-in-law who was also part of this foundation
