Hamza Nakhoda Laurie Stahle EASC 150g April 30, 2008 Reading Response 5 James Watson has interesting views on food culture in East Asia and he uses McDonalds to show this in his book Golden Arches East . His use of different cities in East Asia, and their comparison with each other, regarding this topic is very fascinating. Some places consider it as a local restaurant, others as a high-class dining. Some consider McDonalds to be a part of globalization while others think it is detrimental to other local restaurants. Particularly interesting out of all these cities is the way the ‘golden arches’ are treated in Tokyo, Japan. An important concept of table manners and etiquette is brought up by which Japanese have changed their culture. Japanese are not allowed to eat food with their hands, which is probably the only way McDonalds can be eaten. Japanese usually eat hamburgers still wrapped and not touch the food that they consume. McDonalds is trying to manipulate itself to serve a specific country’s cultural practices
