Hydrostatic 1. “We are the middle children of history, raised by television to believe that someday we’ll be millionaires and movie stars and rock stars, but we won’t. And we’re just learning this fact. So don’t fuck with us.” Alienation and fragmentation are present in terms of modernity, legitimately because society doesn’t nourish or allow them to connect to one another. Although the narrator goes to IKEA to relieve his insomnia and isolation, it cannot fix his troubles or nourish his soul. He has to find a depth beyond physical environments; Fight Club. 2. “Yes, each of us must look into our hearts and acknowledge the darkness there. That’s the shocking truth! The evil power that abducted Sandy is not just the exception to the rule but rather part of the fabric of human reality, of our reality, a dark fabric with which we are all clothed and which we cannot cast off.” One must see good within evil, beauty in the ugly, ugly in the beautiful in order to find salvation. There is an undercurrent that the church desires to feel good rather than look at the evil in the world. Steinke shows a new kind of self – in which commercialization and secularization has moved in and changes the importance of our identity. It begs the question, “Where is redemption?”, “Who does Jesus save?”; Jesus Saves 3. “It took my whole life to buy this stuff…You buy furniture. You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life. But the sofa, then for a couple years you’re satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you’ve got your sofa issue handled. Then the right set of dishes. Then the perfect bed. The drapes.
