Seward PeninsulaTheSeward Peninsulais a large peninsula on the western coast of theU.S. stateofAlaskawhose westernmost point isCape Prince of Wales. The peninsulaprojects about 200 mi (320 km) into theBering SeabetweenNorton Sound, theBering Strait, theChukchi Sea, andKotzebue Sound, just below theArctic Circle.The entire peninsula is about 210 mi (330 km) long and 90–140 mi (145–225 km) wide. LikeSeward, Alaska, it was named afterWilliam H. Seward, theUnitedStates Secretary of Statewho fought for the U.S.purchase of Alaska.The Seward Peninsula is a remnant of theBering land bridge, a roughly thousand mile wide swath of land connectingSiberiawith mainland Alaska during thePleistocene Ice Age. This land bridge aided in the migration of humans, as well as plant and animal species, from Asia to North America. Excavations at sitessuch as theTrail Creek Cavesand Cape Espenberg in theBering Land Bridge National Preserveas well asCape Denbighto the south have provided insight intothe timeline of prehistorical migrations from Asia to the Seward Peninsula.[1][2]The Seward Peninsula has several distinct geologic features. TheDevil Mountain Lakeson the northern portion of the peninsula are the largestmaarlakes in theworld and part of theEspenberg volcanic field. They were formed over 21,000 years ago as the result of an underground steam explosion.[4]The Killeak Lakesand White Fish Lake are also volcanic maar lakes of notable size on the northern Seward Peninsula. Four mountain ranges line the southern side of thepeninsula, the most prominent being theKigluaik(or Sawtooth) Mountains.
