Jose Ponce Persuasive Speech Speech 1310 Section 251 Make College Books Affordable Topic: College Books prices are expensive and are rising. Organization: Problem/Solution Specific Purpose: I would like my audience to believe that there are certain things they can do to help the price of college books decrease and stop rising. Introduction I. Attention Getter: According to a study done in February by the national Campaign to Reduce College Textbook Costs, college textbooks are rising at about four times the rate of inflation. According to the report, the average student spends about $900 per year on books, which is almost 20 percent of tuition and fees at a four-year public institution. II. Relevance: As students, I’m sure we’d all agree that the cost of college textbooks has become a major affordability issue. We all dread when the time to buy new textbooks comes around and as semesters go by, we realize these prices aren’t going down any time soon and seem to be rising instead. III. Propositional Statement: The rising of college textbooks is a problem in colleges and universities across the nation. The solutions I propose are to encourage students to take action and get involved in campaigns such as the “Make Textbooks Affordable” campaign which calls on publishers to stop using practices that drive up the cost of textbooks, or encourage students to purchase their textbooks online at websites outside the U.S., or to trade books online through bookswaps.
